UPDATES & RESOURCES FOR IMPACTED FEDERAL WORKERS

Josh stands firmly with federal workers, government contractors, servicemembers and veterans impacted by these senseless cuts to critical federal programs and the reduction of our federal workforce.

As a lifelong servant leader, Josh knows firsthand that federal employees answer a call to serve the American people, not political agendas. He is working to stand up for their dignity, and do everything he can to provide relief to impacted Virginians.

As a member of the recently-created Emergency Committee on Federal Workforce and Funding Reductions, Josh is working to understand the real and severe impacts of these cuts and the best regulatory and legislative remedies for everyday Virginians.

APPLYING FOR UNEMPLOYMENT IN VIRGINIA

Unemployment benefits are based on your work location, not where you live. The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) has prepared a database of resources for the federal workforce, here.

Please reference the jurisdiction where you work / where your employer pays unemployment taxes to receive guidance on how to enroll below.

If you need any help contacting Virginia Employment Commission, please contact Josh’s official office at 804-698-1021 or DelJThomas@house.virginia.gov.

FINDING A NEW JOB

EMERGENCY COMMITTEE ON THE IMPACTS OF FEDERAL WORKFORCE AND FUNDING REDUCTIONS

In response to the Musk/Trump administration’s war on federal workers and veterans, the Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates, Don Scott, created the bipartisan Emergency Committee on the Impacts of Federal Workforce and Funding Reductions. Delegate Thomas, along with several delegates from around the Commonwealth, sits on this committee.

The committee will meet several times before August of 2025 to assess damage on the local economy, analyze the impact to affected Virginians, and draft policy recommendations to counterbalance a dramatically reduced federal government:

Key Statistics

(Updated as of February 22, 2025)

  • Federal government employees make up 9.8% of Virginia’s workforce, with the vast majority of federal workers concentrated in NoVA and Hampton Roads
  • Federal Funding accounts for 10% of local revenue in Virginia
  • ⅓ of state spending is supported by federal funding
  • A 10% reduction in federal civilian employment would likely erase anticipated job growth in the Commonwealth as a whole and could result in a local recession, with the Commonwealth potentially losing nearly $250 million in total state tax revenue.
